“I’m Not an environmentalist, I’m just trying
to save the planet.”
KARL W. FEILDER, FOUNDER AND CEO OF NEUTRAL FUELS
Neutral Fuels was founded by Karl W. Feilder in 2011 when few people in the Middle East believed that climate change was real and even fewer believed that waste cooking oil could be recycled into biofuel at scale. Ten years later, Neutral Fuels Holdings is based in the Dubai International Finance Centre (DIFC) and is the largest manufacturer and distributor of net zero biofuel in the GCC, having produced more than 13.5 million litres of biofuel in the UAE since inception.
In addition to its UAE biorefineries, the company currently operates in Bahrain, India, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. Feilder’s direct actions have kept 36.5 million kilograms of CO2 and equivalents out of the atmosphere, and 13,020 tonnes of waste cooking oil from being recycled back into the food chain or going to landfill (Q3 2021). His company’s customers include major global corporations such as McDonald’s, IKEA, Nestlé, and Del Monte, school groups such as GEMS, the construction companies that built Expo 2020, and fuel companies such as ENOC, ADNOC and Indian Oil. It takes an extraordinary entrepreneur to succeed so spectacularly when others don’t believe in his mission. Feilder has founded companies that have either sold well (one to Microsoft and one to DHL) or listed well. Recognised by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer, he has used technology to advance biofuel to the state of the art with a range of bespoke IoT hardware, apps and software designed to improve operational and cost efficiencies for customers. Dubbed the “Elon Musk of biodiesel” by Gulf News, it is true that Feilder has turned the UAE into the region’s biofuel knowledge centre and both he and Neutral Fuels have won many awards that attest to this. He has set the industry’s best practice standard with unique innovations including a city scale business model that can be localised for any city with 1M+ inhabitants, and a closed loop recycling model that enables the circular economy. The first Adjunct Lecturer at the Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi, Feilder has worked as a Catalyst at Hult International Business Schools in Dubai and San Francisco and is a judge of the annual million dollar Hult Prize. He is a sought-after public speaker and mentors and coaches start-ups across industry. He holds a B.Eng. (Hons.) in Industrial Engineering, an executive MBA, and is writing his Doctoral thesis on “Psychological Profiling of Start-up Teams”. He is also the lead vocalist of his own Dubai-based classic rock band, Sandstörm and his first album can be streamed on iTunes and Spotify and his second will be released before Christmas 2021.
